Personality: Although scientists have the stereotype of being stiff and standoffish, Sthenno is relaxed and cheerful, if quick to irritate. She is friendly and agreeable to anyone she meets regardless of who they are and where they came from, and tends to get on fairly well with people. Not everyone is fond of her, however, as Sthenno is sassy and a well-known chatter mouth, and can often babble without thinking. She’s also incredibly vain and will spend up to four hours a day on her appearance, and pays particular attention to her hair. She often seeks attention where it isn’t needed, and has gotten into trouble for butting into conversations where she isn’t supposed to be. When annoyed, she resorts to sarcasm, and when something outright makes her snap, she will usually abruptly leave. Sthenno usually deals with her anger by screaming into pillows. She can also be a little impulsive and miscalculated, and has a touch of kleptomania, often burgling important documents from the libraries. She is also afraid of small spaces and is usually found outside, soaking up the sunshine.
She is very independent, choosing to live and mainly work by herself. She isn’t antisocial- Sthenno gets depressed when away from people- but rather refuses to let anyone see her defects. Sthenno has struggled with low self-esteem for most of her life, and still tends to fall back on her old thoughts from school that nobody really wants her around. Hence, she prefers to spend time with animals. Sthenno adores animals, particularly snakes. The only reason she didn’t complete a PhD in zoology was because she didn’t want to keep slicing them open. Regarding the team she works with, Sthenno is still very new, so she is, internally, very nervous that she won’t get along with anyone. However, she tends to hide this with her large, often exasperating personality.

History: Sthenno’s parents were trained engineers who worked at a Hawaiian nuclear fission plant. They were both killed by an overload when she was three years old. She was adopted by a friend of the family called Pele, a contralto opera singer. Pele was well-meaning and made sure Sthenno was fed and taken care of, but maintained something of a distance with the girl, never allowing her to call her ‘mommy’. Pele was glamorous and always impeccably groomed, beginning Sthenno’s fascination with dressing up. Sthenno was a quiet girl who was slow to make friends. She changed schools often, mainly because Pele flew all over the world for concerts. When they finally settled back in Honolulu when Sthenno was ten years old, she was cripplingly shy, and was often made fun of for the rest of her formative years. Eventually, she turned her back on making friends and focussed on her schoolwork. Sthenno’s favourite subject was biology and she had always been fond of animals, volunteering at a shelter since she was fourteen years old. That was what inspired her to enroll in biology at the University of Manoa when she was seventeen years old.
Sthenno was praised for her intelligence throughout her school years, and excelled at her studies. She broke out of her shell a little while she did her undergrad, and made friends. Hoping to one day run her own research facility, she skipped doing a Master’s degree and worked to achieve a doctorate in ecology, specializing in both plant and animal species. Sthenno had almost completed her PhD when Pele was overtaken with a serious fever. She recovered, but her vocal chords did not. Suddenly, Sthenno was burdened with financially supporting her adoptive mother. She had intended to go to the Galapagos Islands as soon as she finished her degree, but research paid very little. Sthenno resigned herself to looking for other jobs that would provide enough for her mother, including in the American military. Much to her surprise, her application was reviewed and she got an offer for a secret mission. During her undergraduate and graduate years, Sthenno had been fortunate enough to spend her summers in places like the Himalayas and the coral reefs off Cambodia. Her experience in a vast array of environments made her an ideal candidate. Sthenno made her way to Colorado and was offered a great deal of money for joining the biology division of a confidential mission. Sthenno accepted, not only for the money, but also out of curiosity.

Role Play Sample:
Sthenno rather disliked these ‘indoor days’.
In retrospect, she’d probably have been better suited as a field researcher. They got to travel the world and spend their days in mountains and rainforests. No data compression, no staring at microscopes for seven hours straight, just peace and observation. Of course, in return for that kind of lifestyle, they were paid next to nothing. But Sthenno had never really wanted money, or worried about it. Of course, until last year, she hadn’t ever been in a position to worry about it. She supposed it would be very ungrateful to complain. Barring what had happened to her mother, she had been hand-picked straight out of graduate school to go to outer space. The fact that they couldn’t reach earth was another damper, but it wasn’t like the Atlantis team hadn’t ever been able to reach home again. There were probably some physics equations that made going home far more impossible than she thought it was, but Sthenno had never been one to dwell on that kind of thing.
Sighing, Sthenno raised her head from the ocular of her microscope and unclipped the latest slide from the stage. She pulled out a red marker and carefully marked the genus and species of the algal bloom she’d scr**ed off a rock earlier that day. It was funny how many earth species had inadvertently been taken across the galaxy by Ancients and Goa’uld alike. She had offered to start up on algae in the hopes of finding new species, but so far she had clocked in exactly one unknown. She clipped a new slide into the stage and leaned back down to gaze into the microscope. The laboratory was loud, as several missions had just returned. In defiance, Sthenno had plugged in her music and was blasting dubstep in her ears. She listened to music to drown people out more than anything else, and so far she hadn’t gotten into any trouble for it. Admittedly, however, it did result in her missing out on vital things, like when someone needed her.
A particularly loud crash nearly made her jump out of her skin. More offended at the distraction rather than anything else, she tore her earbuds out.
“I drift off for half an hour and you people start a riot! I’m sorry, but this is a very busy time of day for me!”
