Vedas Expedition Base --> Personal Quarters
Prince Aeto Ragnorok XII was now the leader of the Aeternians, a species of humanoids created by the Ancients but abandoned without a Stargate on a planet located on the far corner of the Vedas Galaxy. Now, only a mere handful remained compared to the millions that once populated their home planet, Aeternis. Six hundred people were all that were left. Six hundred that were lucky enough to be boarded on one of six ships, if you could call that luck. Every Aeternian had lost someone in the destruction of their planet. From what their sensors could tell, a massive surge came from the Aeternian moon, and in a chain reaction, destroyed everything. At least, that's what they surmised from what little data they could collect before having to jump to hyperspace to avoid their destruction as well.
Images of death and sadness clouded the prince's mind. He was never meant to lead anyone; he was second in line to his older brother, Luto, for ruling his city-state and representing his people in the United Aeternian Senate. The struggle to maintain order while getting his people to their current planet, only to find it inhabited by the Tau'ri humans from the Milky Way Galaxy, and to unite his people in an agreement with the humans was enough distraction that he never had the time to process the death of his loved ones.
And so, Aeto decided it was time.
That morning, he had nothing scheduled, so it was a perfect time for his own "Rite of the Dead" in his private quarters on the base. He gathered several items from the base or from his ship, which rested in a clearing a few kilometers from the base, and returned to his quarters. He sat on the floor in the middle of a square of candles. Each corner was aligned with the four cardinal directions. He sat in the center with an empty metal trashcan he had "borrowed" from one of the offices. Directly in front of him were four photographs, one for each of his intermediate family members, evenly spread out. In the trash can, he placed some kindling and a few pieces of dry wood from his planet, and set them ablaze. It took a few moments, but soon a small, but crackling fire danced inside the trashcan.
Aeto took in a deep breath and closed his eyes to meditate to initiate the ceremony. Then he heard a knock...
