So this is who I am,
And this is all I know,
And this is all I know,
Name: Stephen Alan Hamrick
Nickname: Steve
Callsign: Luck
Date of Birth: October 13, 1978
And I must choose to live,
For all that I can give,
For all that I can give,
Branch: United States Marine Corps
Rank: Lieutenant Colonel
Division: NA
Service Record: Commissioned 2000 out of a NROTC program while studying for a BS in Computer Science from the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California.
First duty station Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in Albany, GA from 2000-2003.
Stationed out of Twentynine Palms, California as a Signals Intelligence Officer as second duty station years 2003 to 2006, as part of the cadre contingent for the Mojave Viper deployment training program where he delighted in tactically nailing units in training who used unencrypted radio comms.
Stationed at Camp Pendleton from 2006-2010 with 1st Intelligence Battalion, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force where he, much to his dislike, found himself saddled with being officer-in-charge of the battalion's commo section instead of his proper job of analysing overheard enemy communications, but was begrudgingly good at running the shop.
His fourth duty station was at the Mountain Warfare Training Center from the tail end of 2010 up to the tail of 2011. Where again he was running a commo section in support of Mountain Warrior deployment training program and keeping his code-breaking skills fresh on newspaper cryptograms.
He made his fourth duty station at the SGC in early 2012 due to a bit of cryptanalysis sent by an old college classmate. Steve made the Stargate program due to an uncanny knack for breaking most of the Lucian Alliance's comms encryption with a fair bit of ease and continued on with SIGINT work for the SGC. He was appointed to lead SG-15, with two subordinate officers and one NCO.
And then the Vedas Expedition was put together, Steve almost didn't go. Until he found out that Blake, now also at the SGC had been offered and reluctant to go because of Steve. After years of Blake's sacrifices professionally for him, Steve decided it was time to make a few for Blake.
As the expedition left, the Shiva was preparing to get underway. Major Hamrick was appointed as CIO and directly coded a significant percentage of the ship's operating system. After alien encounters and being lost in space on the ship, he was granted command of a re-constituted SV-3.
Promotions: Commissioned second lieutenant in 2000 – promoted first lieutenant in 2002 – promoted captain in 2005 – promoted major in 2010 - promoted lieutenant colonel in 2014
The spark that makes the power grow
Face Claim: Richard Armitage
And I will stand for my dream if I can,
Symbol of my faith in who I am,
Symbol of my faith in who I am,
Personality: Loyal and friendly, but Steve can keep secrets like an iron trap when confided in. Hides a tech geek who dreams of meeting a real strong AI under the exterior of a football-loving jock, but both come out regularly in Steve's metaphors and comparisons. Good with delusional or slightly-crazy people due to his mother. Strong desire for repaying his debts, even when people insist that he doesn't owe them anything, though he's bad about not calling the debts others owe to him even when he really needs them
And I must follow on the road that lies ahead,
I won't let my heart control my head,
I won't let my heart control my head,
Likes: Cryptography
Code-breaking games
Anthropology lectures if given by Dr. Blake Warren, mostly just to hear Blake talk
Computers and technology, particularly artificial intelligence programs
USC Trojans athletics, particularly football
American muscle cars
Dislikes: People who think a Computer Science degree means Steve will fix their broken laptop
Long-winded off-topic lectures from scientists who aren't Blake
Being treated like he's stupid just because he has "Major" in front of his name and "USMC" behind it
Dissing and general mistreatment of Dr. Warren by military Vedas Expedition personnel
Aims: Proving that he has skills and ability to be here beyond being good with computers and codes
Keeping Dr. Warren from getting himself killed
Getting to meet a true sentient strong AI system
Fears: -His ground combat skills just not being enough for surviving the Vedas Galaxy
-His personal attachment with Dr. Warren compromising both of their abilities to operate in the field
-Any sort of "alien possession" situation for fear of what the alien would start telling others from Steve's memories
-Going crazy like his mother
Skills: Computer programming and coding
Expert-level marksman
Cryptography and code-breaking
Land navigation
Habits: Tends to talk to and anthromorphize tech he's working with
Describes things in a confusing combination of computer and sports metaphors that Blake refers to as "Stephenese"
Asking or describing speed in measures of "how fast it can make 60 mph?"even when that measure is wholly inadequate to the machine in question
I make my journey through eternity
I keep the memory of you and me inside
I keep the memory of you and me inside
Marital Status: Technically single, but in a 12-year-long relationship that's practically marriage except for the paperwork
Love Interest: Dr. Blake Warren, Vedas Expedition Anthropology section
Offspring: None
Parent: Father – Eric Hamrick (deceased)
Mother – Anna Hamrick
Siblings: Sister – Kelly Hamrick (not on speaking terms with Anna or Steve at all)
Fulfil your destiny,
Is there within the child,
History: Stephen Allen Hamrick was born on Friday the 13th in October 1978 in San Francisco, California. He had a semi-normal childhood, though his mother's own instability created increasing tension in the family until his father's death during Steve's first year of college, combined with Steve refusing his mother's demands for him to bow out of his NROTC commitment in response and come home caused a divide that hasn't completely healed close to twenty years later, though Anna and Stephen Hamrick are still on speaking terms.
Always having a geek's interest in computers and technology underneath a deceptive jock exterior, Steve went to the University of Southern California in 1996 to study computer science, where he quickly gained a reputation for near-technopathy, but quickly despised it when people expected free tech support, usually limiting his willingness to fix computers to the guy who was his current "best friend."
Steve graduated with his BS in Computer Science and was promptly shipped to The Basic School in Quantico, VA, to be finished off as a Marine officer. His first duty station took him to Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany in Albany, Georgia. It was while away from base on a long weekend of shore leave in Atlanta that Steve met the rest of his life in an Atlanta bar, in the form of one soon-to-be graduate student Blake Warren. They were friends by the end of the very drunken night, which led to Steven friend-zoning Blake for six months until Blake decided they were not going to be just friends anymore.
Decision time came when the Marine Corps sent Steve back to California in 2003 to Twentynine Palms. It was to Steve's utter shock that Blake packed up and breezily declared that he could do his graduate school work in California just fine, thank you, and you didn't think you were getting rid of me that easy. The word 'love' may have been uttered.
Steve subsequently went on to Camp Pendleton and then to the Mountain Warfare Training Center, each move and hiding Blake from each group of new subordinates making him consider resigning.
While working as the officer-in-charge of a commo shop once again at the MWTC, Steve found himself freed from a career-long fear of discovery by the legal events of September 2011 and didn't hesitate to introduce his shop to Blake. They started living together, though the "M" word was something neither was ready to touch.
His path to the SGC started with a short, heavily-encrypted transmission from an old colleague at the 1st Intelligence Battalion who needed the communique broken yesterday and found nobody who could do it, and so sent the data to the best SIGINT officer he knew in the Corps. Steve broke it within 48 hours and sent back the unencrypted information, while demanding of his friend to know who the "Lucian Alliance" were. The friend's response was simple, "If you want to know, take a few leave days and come to the Springs."
Steve took that leave, and found himself joining the SGC to apply his knowledge to further signals analysis and code breaking. It was during routine medical and genetic tests that Steve learned he carried the ATA gene, or "make things light up" as his friend explained it. Blake followed to find academic work at the University of Denver, and then took on a new job he refused to talk to Steve about. Then they managed to run into each other a month later in the men's locker room of the SGC.
Steve's participation on the Vedas Expedition was clinched, after he deferred an offer to join with the need to think about it, upon finding out that Blake had also been picked and wanted desperately to go but was reluctant to go if his partner didn't. After 12 years of sacrifices from Blake for him, Steve figured that going to another galaxy should balance it up a little.

Role Play Sample: Steve had a lot to think about as he got out of his Charger and walked toward the front door of the house. The Vedas Expedition, it was the opportunity of a lifetime for anybody in the SGC and yet the reason he had dodged with the need to "think about it" was looking out the window and then opened the door.
"Well, you're late back, babe." Blake was leaning on the door frame. "Now hurry and get cleaned up, we're running late to make the restaurant."
"Funny how both of us had to," he paused on the classified term off-world and substituted, "go out for work and you still manage to beat me home."
"Which one of us had to actually intend a debrief? I wrote up my report and gave it to Colonel Moore, I didn't have to actually be there." Blake rolled his eyes as Steve walked in and closed the door. It was downright liberating, he had to admit, to share a home with Blake without fear. Oh sure, he didn't yell it off the top of Cheyenne Mountain or anything, but it was nice.
"The burden of command." Steve headed straight for the bedroom to get cleaned up.
~
It was in a private little spot at the restaurant that Blake spoke as the waiter left with food orders. "So, I was offered a slot on the expedition."
Steve stopped midway through a drink and set the wineglass down. "What did you say?"
"Well, I explained that I didn't feel like I could just pick up and leave right now."
"Because of me."
"We've been together for 12 years, didn't seem right to go galloping off so far away." Blake turned his water glass and Steve made a decision on the spot.
"You uprooted your own academic career so many times to follow me, without any of the benefits you ought to have. Don't let me between you and going on the expedition, Blake. If you want to go, go."
"Not without you, I'm not. Brand new cultures to study is not worth never seeing you again."
And Steven raised his wine glass to click against Blake's water. "They asked me, too. So this time, I follow you."
Even as he wondered, because while "Steve and Blake" were soulmates, "Major Hamrick and Dr. Warren" had never properly met, how the heck they would work having to be professional in the close quarters of the expedition, the big smile on Blake's face made the decision to pack up and head for another galaxy worth it.
