Personality:
Nikita is not your typical doctor. While he genuinely cares for his patients and feels or warm inside when he helps save someone or fixes them up, he has a soldier's sense of humour, an impressive vocabulary of creative curses, drinks more than he should and has no problem ignoring the Hippocratic Oath. Having been a soldier for so long, Nikita has no sympathy for anyone who attacks, hurts or kills one of his allies and considers extracting intelligence from a wounded enemy as the only reason to save their life. Likewise, he has no issue with killing anyone who looks like they might be a threat.
Underneath his tough guy exterior, though, Nikita is suffering from PTSD and depression. He's been wrestling these issues since he first joined the army and they've almost caused him to commit suicide once before. He recognise his symptoms and that he needs help, but Nikita is far too proud to seek such help, as he believes that to do so would make him less of a man. That said, because he does have these issues, he thinks no less of those who do seek help, simply because he secretly wants to as well.
And I must follow on the road that lies ahead,
I won't let my heart control my head,
I won't let my heart control my head,

History:
Nikita was born into the poor family of a factory worker who had been forced to marry the daughter of a minor local official after it was discovered that, not only were they sleeping, but that Mikhail was not the first man to have slept with Ekaterina. Rather than punishing Mikhail, Ekaterina's father blamed her instead and cast her out. Nikita always had a sneaking suspicion that there was more to this story than was told in the village, and his experiences in the world have given him a pretty good idea what might have really happened.
Growing up, Nikita got himself into a lot of trouble fighting with other boys, often those whose parents were suspected by everyone else of not being as patriotic, or those children who were just that little bit different from everyone else. A large part of this was boredom and the mob mentality that tends to form in groups of bored young men. Had his parents been better off, or if Nikita had been able to get more money somehow, he might well have lost his boredom in a pile of science fiction novels. The few novels he did have, sparked dreams of going into space and seeing new worlds and species.
As Nikita matured, her began to work with his father, although some of his anti-social tendencies didn't quite go away and he was responsible a few broken bones and "lost" items. This caught up with him, though, when he knocked down a belligerent drunk who just so happened to the second cousin to the wife of a Party official. Nikita was given a stark choice: go to prison in Siberia or join the military. Not knowing what he was in for, Nikita opted to join the military.
To this day, Nikita won't be drawn on the subject of Dedovshchina, nor how he obtained several dozen burns, cuts and broken bones during the time of his conscription. What did happen, as hidden as it may be, was bad enough to cause the PTSD and depression that would plague him for the rest of his life.
After his mandatory two years were up, Nikita was not given the choice to leave the military, but was instead assigned to another military unit by his commanding officer at the time. Here, things were much better for Nikita, an he began to enjoy life in the military. His service record, which had previously shown him to be a lazy slacker, suddenly improved as he regained weight and his injuries healed, and he soon felt the desire to stay in the military.
Nikita soon applied to join the Spetsgruppa "A" and, after passing the selection process, was subsequently deployed to Chechnya. Being new, he was assigned to low intensity positions, such as protecting low ranking officials or participating in low risk or non-critical missions. His final posting was to provide security to the FSB building in Grozny just prior to the Chechen retaking of the city. He was wounded six times during the battle, mostly from shrapnel, and lost his ring finger to a sniper's bullet.
After the war, Nikita continued to be stationed in Chechnya. His wife, Larisa, refused to move to Chechnya and, sick and tired of being apart form him for so long, divorced him instead. Nikita took the divorce pretty hard and started drinking even more than he had been previously, although he never drank enough to interfere with his duties.
This was when he married a Chechen woman named Kheda. She'd begun showing him furtive attention ever since she'd laid eyes on him, although Nikita had also felt that something was wrong. He was in a ark place at the time, though, so he didn't really pay attention to it until the first time they went to have s3x. Kheda was pleading for it, she seemed mortally desperate for s3x with Nikita, and that threw him off. This wasn't the sexy kind of begging, it was the desperate kind. So, he calmed Kheda down and got the full story out of her.
Kheda didn't want to tell him anything at first, but Nikita kept on trying until she finally caved and sobbed out her whole story to him. Her whole village had been razed by a group of drunk conscripts and, well, she never mentioned the exact details of what had happened to her, but told him that she was spoiled goods. Nikita understood. Oh, how he understood, and he told her so, although he was as oblique as she had been, and then he'd kissed her forehead and told her that he would look after everything. The next day he talked about how he'd "nailed that bitch", and they were soon married.
Had they married in another time, theirs might have been a long an happy marriage, but Nikita was pressured by his superiors to divorce her and distance himself from her, but he stayed with Kheda until she and her daughter, who everyone assumed was his, had found a way to support themselves, and then he'd complied with his superiors. Even afterward, though, there were always signs and hints for Kheda that he was watching out for her.
The Second Chechen War and the "combined special groups" formed afterwards were a turning point for Nikita. He had no problems at all with "disappearing" rebels, or those suspected of being rebels, but when it came to doing the same to some of their family members he had a bit more of an issue. This, combined with the actions of many conscripted Russian soldiers, the lengths to which ordinary criminals would sink to hide drugs or to fulfill their fantasies had him seeing nothing good in the world.
And so, in late 2001, Nikita put a gun to his head after a heavy night's drinking and pulled the trigger. By some freak coincidence, the detent spring for the safety had become so worn that, when Nikita was drunkenly fumbling with the safety, it had allowed the safety to slip ever so slightly back and prevent the hammer from hitting the firing pin. After checking the safety, and thinking it was off, Nikita tried to shoot himself a couple of more times, before throwing the gun away in disgust an opening another bottle of vodka.
After he recovered from the hangover, Nikita had a moment of clarity and realised just how far he had sunk. He forced himself to sit down and figure out what he was going to do with himself. His childhood dreams were far out of reach, but Nikita had always found his medical training to be the most interesting part of his training, and he had kept up a keen interest in science while in Alfa Gruppa. He decided to try and see if he could apply for Sergei Kirov Military Medical Academy.
After nervously talking this over with his commanding officer, Nikita applied to the Academy, with the idea being that he would rejoin Alfa as their official doctor after he graduated.
Nikita's time at the Academy helped bring him back from the brink. He was no longer surrounded by suffering, and there more than a few young women who found his being a part of the mysterious "Alfa Group" and his scars very attractive. He completed his medical degree just in time to take part the Russian-Georgian War, where he provided medical care for both Russian soldiers and one or two enemy soldiers who had gone "Missing In Action".
Unbeknownst to Nikita, he was being evaluated by civilian and military leaders who thought he might make a good candidate for the SGC. They found him to be a skilled, attentive doctor who could keep his mouth shut if need be, and who could pull his own weight in the event that something went wrong or he was needed in an extraction force. As a result, he suddenly found himself ripped away from the world he ha come to accept and thrust into the one from his childhood dreams.

Role Play Sample:
Nikita was grinning like an idiot. He knew he was grinning like an idiot. He was just so happy that he didn't care what anyone thought of him. If this moment of pure, childlike wonder meant that people didn't buy that he was a seriously Bad DudeTM, then they'd just have to keep on thinking on that. He was on another freaking planet in another freaking galaxy! He literally couldn't be happier than her was now.
"Bozhe Moy," He breathed quietly as he made his way through the crowd of fellow travelers, a full march load on his back and a box of medical supplies in each hand. "Eto real'no! YA deystvitel'no zdes'!"
Moving off to one side so that he didn't get in anyone's way, Nikita dropped the medical gear on the floor an stacked the heavy duty cases on top of each other to make a seat. Sitting down with a slight groan, Nikita eased the heavy pack off his back an let it fall to the ground. He was pretty sure he could outlast a few of the younger soldiers on this mission in terms of endurance with the pack on, but just because he could hauled the damned thing around everywhere, that didn't mean he wanted to.
Gradually, everyone was given a purpose, and, before he could be given an assignment, Nikita attached himself to one of the scout teams and set off to explore the base. This, of course, meant that he missed out on much of the excitement that occurred later, while the team he had attached himself to was locked down in a "radio free" zone, but he didn't mind so much. He was stuck inside an alien room, trying to dissemble an alien lock so that he could get out and explore more of the alien structure.
This was going to be a fun deployment.
