Fiona was in the lunchroom-the military people called it the "mess hall", but it was surprisingly clean. She was eating lunch, and reviewing the updates that NASA had made to the field handbook. Not that she was IN the field, but Fee always believed it was better to be safe than sorry. She was on a bit of the outs with her employer currently-they'd changed the point of her mission, and she was NOT happy about it. There was back and forth between her and her boss-and his boss-and she wanted out. They wanted her six on a platter...either way, Fee was stressed out, but as usual, she told no one about it.
Most of the ohers she lunched with-Aear, or Koren occassionally, and sometimes Fiala or the Colonel, were all either on duty or busy doing personal things. THat was OK with her...she liked her solitude. She was slowly, but surely, gaining her footing, and she didn't want to lose the precious steps forward she had made. The bugle signaling the end of mid-shift came, and she looked around as people poured into the cafeteria. They had gotten a few new faces over the past week-now that the cruisers were up, a few pilots had been sent in to fill the open spots. Both of them had been with Stargate already, and Fee hadn't had a chance to vet them yet, using her personal safety meter. But James Calmara, the closest thing to a TA on the weapons side, had taken an instant-and intense-intrest in the girl now approaching. Fee realized that her table was the only one free.
Sure enough, a quick glance around told her that the others were in thier "groups"-it was a little like High School, with the pilots and their REOs at one table, the weapons guys at another, the medics at a third, and so on. But Fee was by herself. Koren had taken a spot at the Pilot's table, which was fine with her...she liked to watch him when he was around them. He lit up, as if he were born to fly. It pleased her. On the other side of her was the Command table, and Fee avoided that place like the Plague.
Finally, the tall, pretty brunette arrived, and plopped a tray down. Fee's hamburger-half finished- bounced a little. Fee had learned the first DAY not to ask about the food, but instead, just eat it. She was DYING for an authentic Irish meal, though, and she promised herself that one of the first things she'd do when they were back on Earth was find some cabbage and potatoes.
She looked up at the woman.
Allo. Fee said politely, her Celtic accent a perfect balance, since she was calm and well rested.
