Personality: Dan can be very easy going when he’s off-duty. On duty, he knows when to be a hardass NCO and when to nurture and use positive reinforcement. He enjoys the company of women, including in his bed (or theirs) but he is a gentleman about it. At work, he is equally at home maintaining vehicles and weapons or conducting training exercises or patrolling or manning an observation post or going on a scout. He figures that while the maintenance is boring, no one is shooting at him, while the training is repetitive, it prepares him for being shot at, and while deployed outside the wire, he is protecting US interests, which is what he signed up to do in the first place.
And I must follow on the road that lies ahead,
I won't let my heart control my head,
I won't let my heart control my head,
Likes:
1) Dan enjoys his martial arts and yoga practice. It makes him feel physically prepared to handle himself in close quarters. It makes him feel safe.
2) Dan likes Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Funk, Blues, and related musical styles.
3) Dan likes history, particularly US history
4) Dan enjoys a good steak
Dislikes: 4+
-People with backwards views towards women, LGBTQ, religious tolerance, same s3x marriage, etc. He has never seen any reason that women cannot serve in combat roles if they choose. The same goes for LGBTQ. In his professional life, what genitals you have or what you do with the genitals you have, provided it is with a consenting adult, is totally irrelevant to him.
-Sexual Assault, whether male/female, female/male, female/female, or male/male. He has zero tolerance for such things and will do everything in his power to have anyone in his platoon guilty of such an act at least drummed out of the US Army and, if possible, convicted and sent to the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.
-Anti-Semitic jokes or comments. As a Jewish man in the US military, Dan has frequently had to deal with unpleasant situations where someone felt the need to crack an Anti-Semitic joke or make an Anti-Semitic comment. As a younger soldier, he had to take it. As he has risen in rank, he has been more willing to make his displeasure known. He tries his best to educate rather than get really angry. The military has been described as high school on steroids and therefore anything and anyone different are often singled out for ridicule.
-Dan hates tofu, except in miso soup and hot and sour soup.
Aims:
-Make Master Sergeant. This would mean leaving the field, but would move him closer to First Sergeant
-Make First Sergeant. No pay bump, but it would help him make Sergeant Major.
-Make Sergeant Major. Another pay bump and from their he could ride out the rest of his career without really worrying about promotions because there is only one billet with higher pay: Sergeant Major of the Army.
-Make Command Sergeant Major. No pay bump, but it sounds impressive.
-Make Sergeant Major of the Army. Again, a pay bump, a significant one. Also, major self-esteem points. However, Dan is not sure that these are good reasons to try for this billet.
-Congressional Fellow. He’s currently a platoon leader in the Cav Scouts. He has the opportunity to work in Operations at the troop/company level as a Master Sergeant, and as the troop/company top kick as a First Sergeant. After that, he’ll be out of the horse scouts. A program he has his eyes on in the Congressional Fellow program in the Office of Legislative Affairs. It was recently upgraded to a three and a half year program that now offers the opportunity to earn a Master of Legislative Affairs degree from George Washington University. After First Sergeant, he’s considering applying to the program.
-Eventually, Dan would like to settle down and have a family.
Fears:
-Snakes. Dan is terrified of snakes. When sitting in an OP (observation post) he is always afraid that he is going to encounter a venomous snake of some kind. Like if when setting up an OP he misses the signs that there’s a snake hole nearby.
-Large, venomous insects. As a sniper, he is terrified that one day one is going crawl on him and bite him.
-That he’ll royally screw up and get his platoon killed. As a platoon sergeant, his lieutenant depends on his advice. If his advice is off, people could die or be seriously injured.

History: Dan Asher was born in the Bronx, New York at Albert Einstein Hospital in April of 1984. He lived in Pelham for four years until City College threatened lay-offs forcing his mother to seek employment elsewhere. She found a job at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Dan’s father was not happy with the move, because it meant leaving the New York Public Library where he had worked since he was an undergraduate student. His attitude about the move improved greatly, however, once he was able to take a comparable position at the Boston Public Library’s downtown branch.
Dan’s parents were highly educated and expected the same for him, especially his mother, who, by teaching at Brandeis, had secured a free ride for him for his undergraduate degree. Both of them, but his mother in particular, put a lot of pressure on him. While learning to deal with this pressure would later help him in the Army, it took its toll on him and placed great strain on his relationship with his parents.
Dan was very smart and advanced for his age so he was able to enter kindergarten a year early. This meant that he was able to graduate from high school at age seventeen. Reluctantly, he had applied and been accepted to Brandeis and started attending classes there in the fall. Then the September 11th attacks occurred. Dan wanted to run off and fight, but his parents wouldn’t sign the waiver allowing him to join at age 17. Dan decided that he would join at 18 and that since he had to wait until then, he would complete his freshman year at college. By June of 2002, Dan was in Basic Combat Training, followed by One Station Unit Training (OSUT) to be a 19D Cavalry Scout. In 2003, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He would go on to deploy several more times over the next 12 years to both Iraq and Afghanistan, serving as driver, gunner, and vehicle commander for the HUMVEE and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, as well as serving in a dismounted capacity, rising eventually to Squad and Section Leader. Just prior to his assignment to the Stargate Program, Dan was promoted to Sergeant First Class and was expecting to be a platoon leader. The US Army, it appears, has other plans.
Dan earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Arizona State University Online in 2012.

Role Play Sample:
Sergeant First Class Daniel Jacob Asher, United States Army, walked across campus to his mother’s office in the English Department at Brandeis University. Normally, upon change of assignment, he would just send an email to his mother telling her where he was. Sometimes she responded, other times she didn’t. When he deployed, she was kind enough to express concern for his safety…along with her disapproval that he had put himself in this situation in the first place.
“At least you could have completed your degree and become an officer,” she’d say. “And by now you would be out of the field. Further, I wouldn’t have to face the embarrassment I feel when I hear my colleagues talk about their educated, successful adult children. Theirs are all doctors, lawyers, professors, etc., while my child is off playing soldier!”
Dan’s mother didn’t seem to care that he had earned an undergraduate degree in history through Arizona State University Online. She just knew that he didn't take advantage of the opportunities she provided for him.
Dan knew that he usually didn’t help the situation with his mother. Take today, for example. There he was in his BDUs with his cavalry Stetson on his head and his spurs on his combat boots. Dan wore these uniform articles because he was extremely proud of being a horse scout and he wanted his mother to be impressed as well. Instead, he got strange looks from the students and professors he passed as he walked the campus. He did have a nice conversation with a couple of ROTC cadets. They asked him about what he was wearing and what unit he was with. Dan talked up the horse scouts as a career field and told them how to prepare for the training if they decided to go that route. The conversation made Dan feel good about himself, so good, that the dirty looks he got from some of the other students, didn’t really bother him as much as they normally would.
Before he knew it, Dan was standing in front of the building his mother’s officer was in. Taking a deep breath and blowing it out, he entered the building and made his way to his mother’s office. Her door was open, so Dan peeked in. It didn’t look like there was a student in with her, so Dan knocked on the door, which being ajar, swung further open.
“Mom?” he said. “You got a minute or two for me?”
Doctor Miriam Asher looked up from her work. She took a look at her son and took in his appearance, scowling at what she saw.
“Must you come visit me in uniform?” she asked nastily. “Especially in that ridiculous hat and those ridiculous spurs? Is there really a need to announce your profession like that?”
Dan’s eyes narrowed.
“I earned this hat and these spurs,” he said. “Through hard work and determination, both in the field and in the classroom. I’m proud to wear them. Maybe you could give me a break and be proud of me for once.”
Miriam glared at her son for a moment more and then sighed. She rose from her chair, walked around her desk, and gave her son a hug. Dan hugged her back, and for a moment they just stood there. When they broke the hug, both of them felt a bit better.
“I’m glad you’re home safe,” she said. “I’m sorry I couldn’t get away.”
“I understand,” Dan said, though he didn’t mean it. He decided to go the way of least resistance. “Dad was there, so there was a familiar face to great me when I stepped off of the plane.”
Miriam leaned back against the front of her desk and looked her son over again.
“Was it bad?” she asked. “Sorry. That’s probably a stupid question.”
“It’s alright, Mom,” Dan said. “I know it’s hard for people who have no frame of reference for this kind of thing to empathize with people like me. To answer your question…well…actually it wasn’t too bad at all. We spent a lot of time training the Afghan National Police and the Afghan National Army to do the kind of patrol work we do when dismounted…uh…that’s when we patrol on foot. We went out in the field with them and conducted hearts and minds missions, reaching out to the locals. We got into some fire fights, but not as many as I was expecting. It’s sort of a weird situation. If I’m in an armored vehicle, like the Bradley or the Stryker…I’ve shown you pictures of those, right?”
When Miriam nodded, Dan continued.
“Anyway,” he said. “I’m safe from small arms fire and relatively safe from RPGs and IEDs, well, unless we drive over one. That’s always are really bad day. But in those mountains, I can be a real sitting duck if there’s nowhere to maneuver. On the other hand, while I’m more mobile in tight areas on foot, I’m damn vulnerable. So it’s a mixed bag. Nonetheless, it wasn’t that bad. I’ve been on worse deployments. It was sort of funny to see the guys who hadn’t spent as much time on dismounted patrols huffing and puffing for the first month or so.”
“Are you planning to get out soon?” Miriam asked. “While your degrees may not be from the best institutions, they are still at least somewhat respectable from what I’ve learned. You could be earning much more than you are now.
Dan shook his head.
“First of all, I want my pension,” he said. “If I can make Sergeant Major before I retire, and stay in for at least 38 years, I’ll have a nice pension for myself. Plus, there’s another two degrees I want out of the Army.”
“Oh,” Miriam said. “I don’t suppose these a from good schools?”
“Well,” Dan said. “I’d like to earn the MBA in Defense Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. I figure that will help me make Sergeant Major. And there’s a congressional fellow program through the Office of Legislative Affairs. It’s three and a half years long and requires like eight years of service after you’re done, but it gives me experience working in DC with legislators and I’ll earn a Master of Legislative Affairs degree from George Washington University.”
Miriam signed.
“I’m never going to understand your choices regarding the military,” she said. “But…I’ve come to respect your accomplishments. A short while ago I had the officers in charge of the Army ROTC program explain the kind of training you were getting and I talked to ASU about its online program. I was impressed. I didn’t think that I would be, but I was. I still am.
“Thanks, Mom,” Dan said, surprised but pleased. “That means a lot.”
Miriam smiled.
“I should have told you that before now,” she said. “How long can you stay? Can you have dinner with us tonight? Go to synagogue with us this weekend? We’re going to the Levine’s house Friday night and we’re hosting Shabbos lunch at our house. They’ll be some students there, but also some people who have known you since you were little.”
“Sure,” Dan said. “I report for pre-deployment training Sunday night. I have everything I’m going to need with me and I’ve got a ticket for a flight to where I’ll be training.”
“You’re flying civilian?” Miriam asked. “Do you need money to cover the flight?”
“Nah,” Dan said. “The Army gave me some money for a flight. I added some of my own and got a nice seat on a direct flight. I figured I might as well travel in style.”
“Alright,” Miriam said. “I have some work to finish up here. You still have keys, right? Why don’t you go home and get comfortable. Your dad will be home soon and I’ll be home a bit after that.”
“Alright,” Dan said. He turned to leave and then turned back. “Thanks, Mom. I know my choices haven’t been easy for you to understand. I appreciate that you’re trying.”
Miriam hugged her son and then sent him on his way, already planning what to cook for him. She might not understand her son, but she loved him nonetheless.
