Liam  laid on the bed that was provided for him after arriving at Stargate Command headquarters. Shadow was on the floor next to him, asleep at this time. The room was quiet, except for the faint sound of conversations coming from down the hall. At the moment, Liam was thinking about his girlfriend Sadie, who he found out was in the Stargate program as well. After a while, he got up and carefully walked out of the room. After closing the door, he turned and walked down the hall. As he walked, the boots he wore made heavy footfalls on the tile floor. At the same time, he started to think more about this Stargate that he was told about. He found it hard to comprehend that a large circular gate found during a dig in Egypt back in the 1920s was older then Earth and had the ability to transport people across the galaxy. Liam would have to see and experience this for himself.

After a while, Liam walked down a second hall and found Sadie checking to make sure her med kit was fully stocked. Liam just stood in the doorway and watched her, his arms folded over his chest. After a few seconds, Sadie realized some one was watching her, she stopped and looked back, seeing Liam. "Hello" Liam said to her. "Hey Liam" Sadiie replied before walking over to him. Both of them were the same rank so there was no problem with them being together. "I was rather surprised to find out that you were brought into this program." Liam said to her. "Ditto Liam" Sadie replied, that famous grin of her's on her face as she said that, Liam loved it when she did that. After glancing around them, Liam looked back at Sadie, then quickly kissed her, causing Sadie to giggle softly. "You know what will happen if we get caught doing this while on duty." she said to him. Liam smiled a bit, "I know" he replied. Sadie shook her head as he grinned a bit. "I'll let you finish, see you after we get off." Liam said to her. Sadie nodded, then got back to work. Liam watched her walk off, then headed back to check on Shadow.  As he walked down the hall, he noticed another person walking toward him.  Liam stopped and watched the person, wondering who it was.

These Stargate 'Vedas' patches on the shoulders just looked weird. The art department over at Langley must be getting bored or something, because no matter where he went on the base, he always got a comment from one of the SG teams he'd filled out with the past month asking whether Vedas was a mission to plant flowers or grow pot or create choirs on other worlds. While the last idea wasn't a terrible one, the questions never ended with a good conversation; some people felt pity for Koren, being part of a new expedition, and some people felt envious of him, especially the long-time vets who were looking to settle down some in their old age but just couldn't leave the stargate program.

Oh well. Fashion policing wasn't part of the job, and the olive-green jumpers had always been a sign of that. At the moment, what was part of the job was finding the soldier who's picture was on the front page of the folder Koren had received from the base commander. Koren had been searching the halls all morning, but as he turned into another hall he saw something that genuinely surprised him; two soldiers stealing a kiss. Koren did a quick about face, heading around the corner and was about to keep walking when he stopped dead in his tracks, sighed heavily and opened the folder he was holding. Yup. That was the boy...

His jaw setting at the sheer ridiculousness of it all, Koren spun around and walked briskly around the corner again, making a beeline for the soldier. It took the kid awhile to figure out that Koren was aiming towards him, but once he did, their eyes locked, and Koren stopped in his tracks and spoke sharply.

"Sergeant Kelly, at attention!" Might as well mess with the kid, Koren thought. It's the only fun and games I'll get for awhile, "Sergeant, you do realize that fraternizing with a female while on duty is a court-marshallable offense?"

Liam stood at attention when Koren did that.  He could tell right away that Koren was an officer or else he wouldn't be talking like that.  "Yes sir I am aware" he replied while standing at attention.  Good one Liam, your first day here is going to be your last  he said to himself as he stood there.  As he did, Sadie heard what was going on and stepped out into the hall, seeing Liam and Koren.  Should I go over?......no, don't, that will just get you in trouble as well she said to herself, not knowing what would transpire in the next few moments.

Liam continued to stand at attention, unaware of the fact that Koren was messing with him.  At the same time, Shadow, Liam's German Shepard, heard the commotion as well and went down the hall to find his master.  Finding him with Koren, Shadow growled a little, then barked, surprising Sadie, she turned and looked at him when she did that.  "Shadow, hush, you'll get us in trouble." she said to him.  Shadow looked up to Sadie when she said that to him, then wined a bit, it was clear he was worried about Liam.  Sadie noticed it as she stood with him in the hallway, then took him back to the room she had been working in.

Liam heard Shadow, but didn't take his gaze off Koren, knowing what would happen if it did.  It was then that he noticed that Koren was an Air Force officer.  "No offense sir, but why does an Air Force officer care about mud eating grunt like this one, sir?" Liam asked.  He wasn't one to disrespect officers, no matter which branch they came from, but something seemed different to Liam at this point.

Kelly snapped to attention at the mention of his name, his eyes locking with Koren's for a second before adopting the typical distanced stare of the trained military. At the shout of his Kelly's name, the female Kelly had been snogging peaked around the door jam of the room down the hall. Her eyes met Koren's, but unlike Kelly's, froze there in defiance, though her face only portrayed passive interest. Koren smiled internally; she has some spunk to her.

"Yes sir I am aware" the soldier replied to Koren's inquiry of court marshalling. Koren could see the poor kid beating himself up inside for letting his feelings get the better of him. Alright, Koren thought, beginning to let down his guard, lesson learned; fun had. Just then Koren heard a sound that he couldn't quite believe until he turned around and saw what it was. A dog stood, head held high in defiance and assertiveness, barking at him, staring him straight in the eyes. Koren's disbelief quickly faded into angry exasperation. This was clearly the man's dog; no base-trained dog would be out alone without it's handler, and would definitely recognize the scent-code given off his jumpsuit as friendly. Koren turned back to Kelly, stepping in so he was inches away from his face. He wasn't so sure whether he was messing around now or not, but the charade would continue regardless.


"So you get assigned to this new post and you decide to bring your whole social life with you? This isn't your facebook profile, Sergeant!" Koren pointed at the dog without looking on the last statement. The dog quickly shut up, possibly realizing it was in over it's head, and trotted to the girl still standing in the doorway watching with increasing agitation at the confrontation going on in front of her. 

"Shadow, hush, you'll get us in trouble," she said as she pulled the dog away into the room. Now it was just them, hombre to hombre.

"No offense sir," Kelly spoke up stupidly, but admittedly bravely, "but why does an Air Force officer care about mud eating grunt like this one, sir?" Koren smiled for the first time that day. A little questioning of authority was good in an SG recruit; it kept the ranking officers humble and the entire program on it's toes. After all, General O'Neill was not exactly the glowing representation of obedience in his time in the program, and neither was Koren for that matter.

Koren couldn't help but drop into a deep, southern-cowboy accent, placing one hand on the butt of his Glock and dropping the other to his side, " 'Cause we airmen run these here parts, ya' understan'?" Kore paused a moment for effect. The soldiers look was priceless.

Koren dropped the accent and grinned, "At ease, soldier." After Kelly had obliged, Koren offered a hand, "Second Lieutenant Koren Telion. I'm supposed to be showing you the base today."

A southern accent, really?  Liam asked himself as he stood at attention.  I've heard some bad attempts at that but that one takes the cake. he added while watching Koran introduce himself.  "Nice to meet you Lt. Telion." Liam said in reply while standing there.  "For the record: I wouldn't have gotten in that much trouble as I am the same rank as the woman in question." Liam said in reply, a slightly matter of fact tone in his voice as he said that.

Sadie knew that as well as she finished working.  After she was finished, she took Shadow back to her room on base, she would wait there for Liam until he got back from his meeting with Koren.  She knew as much as Liam that nothing would have happened but a slap on the wrist.  Both of them were of the same rank so it wouldn't have amounted to much.  Sadie brushed that off and went back to interacting with Shadow.  She knew how close he and Liam were.

Back in the hallway, Liam waited for Koren to lead him on the little tour of the base.  At the same time, his thoughts came back to the Stargate itself and how Shadow would react when they had to travel through it.  "Where are we going first sir?" Liam asked while watching him.

"Nice to meet you Lt. Telion," Liam said in reply, "For the record: I wouldn't have gotten in that much trouble as I am the same rank as the woman in question."

"Don't read me the rulebook, Sergeant;" Koren scolded jokingly, "I am well versed in how to jump through it's loopholes."

Koren gave a quick grin to Kelly, spun on his heel and started walking down the hall. "Come!" he called to the still waiting Sergeant.

"Where are we going first sir?" The soldier asked.

"The fun part, of course. The room with all the action." Koren paused for effect, "The embarkation room!" Koren's disturbingly good mood was beginning to disturb himself as well; he NEVER talked like this to an enlisted officer.

"Anything I need to know about this room?......I wasn't told much before I came here, sir." Liam said in reply as he walked with Koren.  The one thing that Liam did notice when he arrived was that it wasn't just American military personnel and scientists working/stationed here.  By his best count, he noticed that there were people from at least 20 different nations here.  All these people crammed into one place   Liam said to himself as he walked down to the room.  He had no idea as to what he would see next on this little tour.

At the same time, Sadie was still interacting with Shadow, thinking back to the day she met Liam.  She was the first to support Liam when he said he was going into the army, surprising him when she told Liam that she was enlisting as well.  They went to the same place for basic, but were split up after graduating.  However, Sadie was thankful they met back up here, picking up where they left off in their relationship.

Shadow watched Sadie as she thought, a soft whine leaving his mouth as he sat there.  Sadie looked at him and smiled a little.  "I'm okay Shadow" Sadie replied in her country girl voice.  Shadow wagged his tail, then hopped up next to Sadie, licking her face at the same time, causing Sadie to giggle in reply.  A solder outside heard them as he walked by, but just shook his head.

"Anything I need to know about this room?......I wasn't told much before I came here, sir." Liam said in reply as he walked with Koren.

"Yes," Koren said, looking at his watch and increasing his pace; the fun and games about the Sergeant's social life had left them low on time. Turning left down the next hallway, the opposite direction the sign was pointing for the embarkation room, Koren broke into a jog, "Never enter it unarmed."

Koren hurried down the hallway and into the armory. As Koren was handing Kelly a standard issue M16, Koren realized that the plethora of Ancient, Goa'uld, Asgaurd, Wrath and other alien weapons probably shocked the soldier half to death, but that part of the tour would have to come later; Koren liked to start things off with a bang!

After grabbing an M16 himself, Koren ushered Kelly forward. "C'mon!" he said, sprinting back down the hallway towards the embarkation room just as the announcement came over the radio:

"Offworld Activation!" Koren grinned wide, "Showtime!"

Koren stacked up behind security team and signaled Kelly to do the same. As the doors were opening, Koren leaned over to Kelly. "Keep your sights trained on the event horizon," Koren yelled over the blaring klaxons, "If anything comes through the portal that isn't wearing an SG uniform, keep your weapon trained on them. If given the order, always, ALWAYS shoot to kill." Koren knew that most of this was going straight over the boys head, but he also knew Kelly was smart enough to apply the knowledge once he knew what the heck it was Koren was talking about. He turned halfway, but then turned back, "and make for damned sure they're dead!"

The door slammed open and the security team rushed forward. Koren took up a position at the far back and watched as the gate spun and Lambda chevron snapped into place on top of the gate. It never gets old; the splash and recoil of the establishing wormhole was deafening as the etherial oceanic surface finally settled into a pane of liquid glass.

Koren glanced over at the Sergeant to see how he was taking his rude awakening to the gate. I should really stop messing with this kid...

Liam nodded in reply when Koren said that to him, taking the M-16 at the same time.  Hearing the alarm, Liam quickly and smoothly loaded a magazine into the rifle and cambered a round.  He was thankful that he had his P228 with him at the same time.  Liam had noticed the other weapons, but didn't think anything of them.  He listened to Koren tell him what to do, nodding a bit in reply.  Watching the gate "come to life" made Liam a bit awe struck, but he stayed focused, keeping his rifle up and ready.  That was interesting  Liam said to himself as he watched what took place.

At the same time, Sadie felt the floor shake, as did Shadow.  They both looked down the hall, wondering what that was.  Sadie looked back at Shadow.  "I guess we will find out later." Sadie said to Shadow, who tilted his head to the side in reply.  Sadie smiled a bit, then pet Shadow.

Back at the gate, Liam kept his eyes trained on what Koren told him, looking for anyone that didn't have the SG uniform on.  He kept his finger on the trigger as he stood there with the USAF security force personnel and other soldiers that had arrived to assist them.  Standing next to Liam was Romanian Army Tech. Sergeant Gabriela "Gabby" Vasile.  Liam and Sadie met her just after they arrived on base.  They both helped Gabby settle in at both the base and in the states, becoming good friends with her despite their age and rank difference.

Koren watched as SG-7 booked it through the gate. The last member ran through and screamed "Close the Iris!" As the iris was closing, several arrows and spears shot through the event horizon before the iris blocked it for good. About a dozen loud thuds followed before the Stargate disengaged. Well, Koren thought, That changes the mood of things; this just got serious.

Koren watched as SG-7 sat down on the ramp and checked their gear and themselves. Realizing that he was the highest ranking SG member in the room aside from SG-7 themselves, Koren approached the squadron leader. "Are you alright, Major? Do you need a medical team?"

"No, I'm fine." He gasped, "Check on my men."

"Sergeant!" Koren called to Kelly, implying he take charge in checking on the men. Koren squatted down in front of the Major. "What happened? Wasn't this supposed to be a routine explore and recon mission?"

"Nothing to worry about, Lieutenant," the Major grinned as he dechambered his M16 and checked the mag, "Just some very territorial locals is all."

"It's been awhile since a ground team been attacked on sight when exploring a new world, Correct?" Koren said, taking the M16 from the man.

"Yeah, well..." The Major grimaced again, looking up at Koren, "They thought we were Goa'uld."

"They What?!" Koren said incredulously. He hadn't heard the term Goa'uld used outside of old mission reports. "Sergeant," Koren called over to Kelly, "You've done your homework; why would an indigenous people think we're Goa'uld?"

Liam nodded in reply after seeing what had happened and when Koren said that to him, then took over in getting the men of SG-7 looked over.  Just to cover himself and them, he had Tech. Sgt. Vasile get Sadie and her medical team down here, having the air force guys assist them.  Liam had his M-16 slung behind him at this time, with the safety on.  Liam continued to over see the tending to of the team while the Major of SG-7 talked with Koren, wondering what the heck had happened that would cause the people they were visiting to do something like that.

Hearing Koren ask him what could have made the people of that planet think SG-7 were Goa'uld made the reason all to clear.  "Sir, The only explanation is that the Goa'uld visited the planet dressed as a Stargate team and attacked them." Liam said in reply as he watched Koren and the major.  It was the only one Liam could think of and the only one that made sense.  Liam continued to watch them after he said that, wondering what the reaction would be and the next step that they would take.  As he stood there, Sadie looked over to him while working with the team.  She had a feeling that Liam might be going on his first mission sooner then they expected.

"Sir," The Sergeant piped up, "The only explanation is that the Goa'uld visited the planet dressed as a Stargate team and attacked them."

"Impossible!" The major called out, rising to his feet, "We eliminated the Goa'uld when we killed Baal back in 2008!"

"Not necessarily," Koren responded, his eyes far away, deep in thought, remembering all of the mission reports he'd read, "Baal was only the last system lord; we have no idea how many more Goa'uld are out there, though without their armies they pose no real threat. But it is possible that a small group of Goa'uld hid away among a civilization and have banded together for mutual gain and to try to find a new home base. Seth did something similar here on earth. All they would need is a fairly submissive people who are willing to believe they are Gods."

"Well, there's only one way to find out," said the Major, attempting to grab the M16 back from Koren.

"Not like this," said Koren, "You guys unload your gear and get your medical exams. Sergeant Kelly and I will talk to the General about sending a diplomatic team through the stargate to figure out what the heck happened on that planet and why the Goa'uld are cropping up again."

The Major huffed. "Whatever you say, Lieutenant," he said, putting extra emphasis on his rank. Koren knew that the only reason the Major was not objecting was because of Koren's 8 years of service to the SGC. Seniority has it's perks, even if rank isn't one of them.

As SG-7 pickup up their gear and walked out of the room, Koren called to Kelly, "Sergeant! Walk with me."

As they were walking down the hallway back to the armory, Koren turned to Kelly, "Sorry about this whole mess. Usually the tours aren't this erratic." Koren reoriented himself and began again, "You've seen the gateroom and the armory. I'm bringing you in on the conversation with the General because I think it's important to meet the man who will order extra SG units in to save your a** if you mess anything up badly enough, and also so you can learn that while he's a nice man, he's not going to hold your hand through this."

Koren stopped and turned to the Sergeant and softened his tone considerably, "Kelly, the most important MO of the Stargate program is 'learn quickly and adapt quicker.' If you can adapt to the changing circumstances every waking minute here brings, you'll be fine, but if this is getting overwhelming, let me know now and we can get you out of here before the bullets really start flying, ok?"

Liam watched the Major has he huffed liked that.  "I'm just calling it like I see it sir."  Liam said in reply, causing the Major to look at him, then shake his head before leaving as Koren ordered him to.  Liam watched him leave, then went with Koren to go and speak with the General.  "Sorry about this whole mess. Usually the tours aren't this erratic." he heard Koren say to him.  "Its no problem for me sir." Liam said in reply as they walked, only to stop when Koren told him that part about adapting. 


"Sir, I'll be honest: none of this has been overwhelming.....granted I was a bit puzzled about the Stargate, but that was something I had to see for myself.  I grew up in the country and had to learn how to adapt ever since I was born.....you don't have to treat me with kid gloves, sir." Liam said to him honestly, but not in a tone that came off as him being disrespectful.


Down the hall, Sadie and her team of Army and Air Force medics were tending to SG-7.  Everything was going smoothly.......until one of the team members got a little to close to Sadie.  "Airmen First Class Riley, keep touching me like that and I will see to it that you get court marshaled for harassment." she said to him sharply.

"Sir," The Sergeant said, his eyes not wavering from Koren's, "I'll be honest: none of this has been overwhelming.....granted I was a bit puzzled about the Stargate, but that was something I had to see for myself. I grew up in the country and had to learn how to adapt ever since I was born.....you don't have to treat me with kid gloves, sir."

Koren broke into a broad smile for the first time since they'd met, "Good!" He said, clapping Kelly on the shoulder, "Then lets get these weapons back to the armory and talk to the general."

Koren turned and started the short walk to the armory once again.

"So, Sergeant," He asked, checking both M16's were securely on his shoulders as he did so, "Intrusive question: Why were you picked for the Stargate program? What do you think got you this gig?"

Liam nodded, then followed Koren back to the armory, removing the live round from the chamber of the M-16, then the magazine, putting the round he had in the chamber back in with the others after handing the rifle over to Koren.  "So, Sergeant," he  heard Koren ask as he checked that both M16's were securely on him, "Intrusive question: Why were you picked for the Stargate program? What do you think got you this gig?"  Liam looked up when Koren said that to him. 

"I'm not sure sir." Liam said in reply as he walked with him to the General's office.  "My first thought was that it had to do with the fact that I'm a K-9 handler and there are no other K-9 teams in the Stargate program, sir." he replied while walking next to Lt. Koren.  He didn't know of what was going on with Sadie as he said that to Koren.


Back in the medical wing, two of the Air Force security force personnel came over and stood with Sadie after she said what she did to A.F.C. Riley. The young airmen backed off when the two men came over. Sadie watched him, then got back to work, thankful that Riley behaved himself for the rest of the exam.
